Kaarel Jõudvald, owner of the enterprise, ruminates that the first Möku was opened in 2009 in Tartu. "It was about the same size as the living room in one of the average panel houses. Seating areas and space were scarce, which is why visitors had to stand tightly shoulder to shoulder. This, however, supported our concept - to make the humble Estonians communicate with each other. Behind the name Möku ("awkward") is the idea of a place where people (and we ourselves) would not take themselves too seriously and would perhaps be able to make fun of themselves and their awkwardness," explains Jõudvald the nature of Möku.
The name was born in the course of a joint brainstorming, says Jõudvald: "At some point, one of Möku's founders, Lauri Kinkar, began leafing through a dictionary and saw the word "möku". This stayed. Our whole concept later developed around the name."
