This afternoon, in a formal awards ceremony at the Proto Discovery Factory, Estonian best young inventions of 2023 were revealed. The Estonian Patent Office, together with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), set up a special prize again. The special prize of the Patent Office and WIPO was awarded to a smart young inventor, 4th grade student Karl Mattias Pulst, who invented a home package press.

The examiners of the Patent Office unanimously found that the package press of Karl Mattias  is very practical and useful in any household with a garbage container that has to be emptied regularly. The empty boxes and packages are ususally placed in a mixed municipal waste or packaging container, therefore a simple device like that can reduce the volume of rubbish in the containers and they have to be emptied significantly less often. In addition, the invention is made of a readily available material, making it easy to manufacture. It is also an important advantage that the invention does not require electricity or a smart device for operation.

In an interview after the awarding ceremony, Margus Viher, Director General of the Patent Office, pointed out that there were several inventions related to garbage. According to Viher, the solution of Karl Mattias caught the eye because he had really thought through all the details and worked hard on it. "It can be seen that this young man is going to have a great future as an inventor," Viher praised the work awarded by the Patent Office.

Karl Mattias himself confirmed to the Patent Office that although he participated in the Contest of Young Inventors for the first time this year, he definitely plans to continue inventing in the future. According to the young man, he is very hopeful that he will indeed be an inventor. His parents and teachers encourage and help him along this journey in many ways.

We wish Karl Mattias many brilliant ideas and courage to spread his wings!
